Nike Special Field Boot

Nike took on an honorable mission in crafting the Special Field Boot (SFB), looking to give the first responder ease of movement and the ability to act quickly in unpredictable circumstances. The shoe was inspired by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman’s time in the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army. The signature aesthetic of the army boot was updated with materials such as synthetic leather overlays and an anatomical sock liner, but it generally looked the same up top. The Free technology was the main point of impact, a stark contrast to the bulky, near-inflexible boot traditionally seen in the field of action.

The SFB was so striking that it inspired artist Tom Sachs’ long-awaited collaboration with Nike, the Nike Mars Yard Shoe. The other-worldly sneaker borrowed the unique sole of the Nike SFB.
