Like so many of Michael Jordan’s signature sneakers, the Air Jordan 14 is tied inextricably to a legendary NBA moment: The Last Shot.

Rising above Bryon Russell with 5.2 seconds left on the clock in Game 6 on the road against the Utah Jazz, His Airness sunk the final shot of his playoff career in black-and-red AJ 14s to clinch a second three-peat and sixth title for the Chicago Bulls.

But what often goes untold about the 14 is that it wasn’t exactly ready yet for the world to see.

Legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield had slipped MJ a prototype of the 14 during those famed 1998 Finals, but asked him not to wear it. We all know how that turned out: he wore them, he loved them, and he won his final championship in them.

Inspired by the sleek lines and speedy looks of the sports cars that Jordan favored, the Air Jordan 14 featured breathable mesh and two Zoom units to create a lightweight, comfortable and fast shoe for on-court action. A brand-new colorway for the model, the upcoming release features an all-white, genuine leather upper as a clean base, while hits of glossy Royal Blue jump out at the midsole, heel and tongue tab.
