Take ’em to school in the new Air Jordan 5 Retro ‘Apple Green’

In the world of basketball sneakers, few things are more highly coveted than the Player Exclusive, or PE, models.

Unless you’re a college or professional athlete, chances are pretty slim that you’re getting your hands on a PE colorway.

One of the more eye-catching PEs in recent memory was the 2014 release of the Air Jordan 5 Retro ‘Oregon Ducks’ colorway.

It was part of a line designed over the years by a University of Oregon graduate whose name you may have heard over the years: a fella by the name of Tinker Hatfield.

A track star for the Ducks in his own collegiate years, Hatfield of course went on to design some of the most iconic Nike and Jordan Brand shoes of all time.

For the 2014 release he strayed from the versatile black-and-white tones that had graced sneakers in the rest of the collection until that point: “I was like ‘let’s just do a totally bright green one and put the Duck on it.'”

The result was iconic — the Apple Green upper, the hits of Strike Yellow, the unmistakable cartoon Duck on the heel, all signifying the wearer’s Oregon pride.

The originals are hard to come by, and prohibitively expensive on the secondary market, but now everyone has a shot at owning a Ducks-inspired colorway with the release of the forthcoming Air Jordan 5 Retro ‘Apple Green.’

Dressed in that familiar Apple Green hue, with Strike Yellow highlights at the medial and lateral midsole and deep black mesh paneling and socklining, this 2020 edition of the AJ5 lacks the Oregon branding at the tongue and heels, but includes a special heel tag and the word “ELEVATE” emblazoned inside the tongues.

But even without the university logos, if it looks like a duck…
