Aging like fine wine: The Air Jordan 5 Retro ‘Purple Grape’ is a new twist on a 1990 look
Out of all the Air Jordan 5’s OG colorways, the “Grape” was the only one that didn’t match the Chicago Bulls’ uniforms.
That was quite literally the intention: legendary Nike and Jordan Brand designer Tinker Hatfield wanted to step outside the conservative nature of existing sneaker hues. That brought us the splashes of Grape Ice and New Emerald on the 1990 version.
Grape hues have returned to the model several times over the years, with 2013’s “Black Grape,” the “Pre-Grape” in 2015 and the laceless “Fresh Prince” version in 2018 that paid homage to Will Smith’s iconic TV character.
Now, after the first half of 2020 brought us the ‘Court Purple” AJ1s and AJ4s, everyone’s favorite fruit-adjacent colorway is back and bolder than ever to brighten up those summer ‘fits in 2020, three decades after the shoe’s original arrival.
It features a suede upper in deep Grape tones and a black midsole that lets the New Emerald highlights pop on the Retro 5’s signature fighter plane-inspired flames, lace locks and the Jumpman logo on the tongue.
The unmistakable white “Glass Bottom” outsole that was groundbreaking in 1990 when the Jordan 5 first hit shelves provides an extra color contrast to the darker upper colors, while Jumpman logos on the heels and underside cap off the detailing.
