Ever since Marty McFly’s futuristic sneakers fit themselves to his feet in 1989’s vision of 2015 with the Nike Mag, anyone who’s ever laced up a pair of shoes has fantasized about the ability to have auto-fastening kicks.

Nike knows it, based on the response to the 2011 and 2016 releases of the self-lacing shoe designed for the silver screen and the shelves by (you guessed it) Tinker Hatfield and that’s how the Adapt product family came to be.

The space-age idea, brought to life with what the Swoosh called “Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing,” or E.A.R.L., has been utilized in a handful of Nike models, mostly for basketball purposes.

This latest release, however, is built purely for lifestyle, and is the cyborg brother of the Air Max we all know and love: The Nike Adapt Auto Max ‘Fireberry.’

Sitting atop a new purpose-built Air Unit, the breathable black mesh upper contrasts with a grey, patterned mudguard, while hints of Volt and Berry complete the look.

The 2020 editions even allow for wearers to assign snugness settings for activity and leisure, and offers adjustment via voice control with Siri Shortcuts or Google Assistant. Unreal.
