A Look Back at Some of Jay Z’s Sneaker Lyrical References
“I got this young chick, she’s so immature/She like, why you don’t buy me Reeboks no more?’”
Song: “Girls, Girls, Girls”
Album: The Blueprint (2001)
We’ve been talking about mostly Jordan and Nike but anyone over 26-years old remembers the S.Carter line Jay-Z had with Reebok back in 2003. The line centered around Gucci inspired sportswear kicks with matching apparel. The S.Carters were dope at the time but they’re definitely shoes from ’03 aesthetically; with that said, no one can argue the impact of Reebok’s partnership with Jay. Footwear sponsorship directly tied to athletes, but Jay-Z broke that mold and now we see every brand partnering with artists & musicians because of their cultural influences. Drake, A$AP Rocky and Kanye wouldn’t have signature footwear if Jay-Z hadn’t created the blueprint (get it?).
Thank you for your dopeness and contributions to our sneaker culture, Hov. Happy Birthday to one of the greatest to ever do it.
