Home / Air Jordan Retro 12

Jordan Brand is no stranger to celebrating the Chinese New Year with signature kicks. Over the years we’ve seen JB give us some dope sneakers that honor the zodiac animal sign for that year. Zodiac themed Jordan’s are nothing new, we’ve seen Retros; team Jordan’s, and even special packs that honored the Chinese New Year. Some of the most notoriously known colorways are the Year of the Rabbit, Year of the Dragon, Year of the Snake and this year, we get the Year Of the Pig. Like last year, Jordan Brand is using the Retro 12 model to bring to life the storytelling practice of ancient Chinese patchwork and quilting (also known as 百家衣 / baijiayi). For centuries, Chinese patchwork has been given to children as a symbol of prosperity, strength and appreciation. Quilt pieces are sourced from multiple families in a community, which earned the patchwork a nickname, the “Hundred-families” robe.

This celebrated iteration of the shoe features a Black satin upper with White textured overlays atop a matching White rubber sole. Metallic Gold detailing and multicolored pattern on the inner lining, which could be a nod to the celebration of CNY, completes the design. One of the key embellishments featured on this year’s Air Jordan 12 ‘Chinese New Year’ design is its Black, fabric upper that is meant to either fade away with wear or be purposely removed to reveal a hidden layer of traditional Chinese Bai Jia Yi quilting. Underneath the fabric upper is an aforementioned colorful, eye-catching pattern that boasts vibrant combinations of Blue, Red, Yellow, and much more.
