‘Change the world’ with a Women’s-exclusive Air Jordan 9 Retro
Since 1987, March has been recognized as Women’s History Month, a month for celebrating women’s accomplishments and contributions to the United States.
It started off as a holiday local to the city of Santa Rosa, California, in 1978 as “Women’s History Week,” a celebration organized by The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women that included educational presentations and a parade.
A couple years earlier, the United Nations had begun sponsoring International Women’s Day, which has fallen on March 8 since its inception in 1911.
The U.S. got on board with commemorating the date in 1975 and, in 1987, the National Women’s History Project convinced Congress to expand the celebration of March 8 to a month-long affair. Thus Women’s History Month was born on a national scale.
Jordan Brand is celebrating this year, too.
For the first time ever, Jumpman is bringing the Air Jordan 9 to its women’s line with a colorway that’s pleasing to the eye and carries a message that may have been inspired by MJ himself but applies to the many women who changed the course of history.
The Women’s-exclusive Air Jordan 9 Retro ‘Cactus Flower’ is familiar in its design and construction — the base model has been telling an international story since its first release in 1993 — but features different colors on each shoe.
The left sneaker features muted yellow and purple tones at the midsole and heel counter respectively, while the right shoe utilizes orange and magenta notes reminiscent of a sunset.
These colors are made from natural plant-based dyes and applied to a white upper made from vegetable-tanned leather, a process that’s been used for thousands of years.
The finishing touches come on the heel tabs, printed with the phrase “Change the World,” a perfect slogan for Women’s History Month regardless of its intended meaning.
