College Game Changed Up
The college football landscape is an ever-changing one, and in recent years, the job of head coach has been a revolving door more so than ever before. Basically, it’s been a “win to stay in” environment, and if you lose, well, you lose. The bowl season’s not even over, but some head coaches at prominent programs have already gotten the boot, and that number is upwards of 15 now. Here are a few big names that’ll be making unemployment line appearances in the coming weeks.
Hired in ’09, National Champ in ’10, fired in ’12. We’re speaking of none other than Gene Chizik, the man responsible for returning the Auburn Tigers to prominence and flushing it away in the span of three years. We may not see him applying for unemployment benefits anytime soon though, as he’s expected to collect $200k a month for the next three years.
After being a powerhouse for the better part of the previous 20 years, the Tennessee Volunteers haven’t necessarily been exciting to watch as of recent. Their newfound failure has been due in large part to the sanction-speckled tenure of former head coach Lane Kiffin and the underachievement of his successor, Derek Dooley. The Vols have taken the first step to turning the page by getting rid of Dooley. The hire of former Cincinnati coach Butch Jones attempts to forge a new chapter moving forward.
The Golden Bears of California have bid adieu to their longtime head coach, Jeff Tedford. After flitting between dominance and mediocrity and eventually falling into obscurity, the athletic department finally decided to part ways and go in a new direction. Probably not the best idea in foresight, but maybe hindsight will prove otherwise.
