Through the last couple of years, sneaker brands have celebrated and honored historic moments through colorways and special designs. While athletes have become more involved in what’s going on in the world, they have began to use their platform to make it known that they’re taking a stand on how they feel about certain causes. LeBron James started the NBA season by stepping out on the court in his signature shoe with “EQUALITY” stitched into the heels. Most recently, Nike Basketball and Jordan Brand are celebrating Black History Month with the message of EQUALITY through special colorways on the LeBron 15, KD X, Kyrie 3 and Air Jordan Retro 1 and Air Force 1 Low CMFT.

The Nike LeBron 15 features a black, red and green Flyknit upper which is meant to honor the Pan-African flag. Metallic Gold “BHM” logos appear on the tongues and insole to make sure the message is known. One of the shock absorbers on the sole of the sneaker is inscribed with the date 07-13-2016 in gold which represents the day James, along with Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, and current Cavalier teammate Dwyane Wade stood up at the ESPY’s to give a speech about equality and ending violence.

Kyrie Irving’s signature sneaker, the Nike Kyrie 4 is one of the star footwear styles in the lineup. His Black History Month sneaker features a white-based hue across its knitted and leather upper that is detailed with the word “Equality” embossed across the whole shoe. A white midsole, black lining and a nod to the Pan-African flag with red, black and green hues are seen on the outsoles to complete the theme altogether.

Kevin Durant just hit the career milestone of scoring 20,000 points and now his signature sneaker is getting the Black History Month treatment. The KD X features a black-based upper with with red and green knit detailing. Its midsole dons the colors of the Pan-African flag colors and is complimented by metallic gold branding. 05-06-2014 is embossed in gold on the medial side of the shoe right above the midsole. This date represents the day that Kevin Durant won his NBA MVP and the mayor of Oklahoma City, Mary Fallin, declared it ‘Kevin Durant Day’ as a gesture of gratitude to KD’s contributions to the community.

The Nike Air Force 1 ‘Equality’ sports an all-black leather upper with the word “EQUALITY” in white printed on the heels. These have a premium feel thanks to the tumbled leather tongue label and historical dates in Metallic Gold on the inner tongues. Nike’s signature CMFT insoles and a translucent outsole completes the design.

Uncle Drew continues his sneaker legacy with the Swoosh as they prepare to launch his fourth signature shoe. While the Nike Kyrie 3 has had a strong run of creative colorways and big-game moments, Kyrie looks to move on to the Nike Kyrie 4. The Kyrie 4 made its debut two weeks ago and has been a strong silhouette for the SWOOSH. As Kyrie and the Boston Celtics continue to make a push for the Championship, this next Kyrie 4 is dropping in an obsidian and teal color scheme. This Nike Kyrie 4 features a dark obsidian suede upper paired with a matching embroidered Nike Swoosh on the sides. An aqua shade of blue and hits of neon green are seen on the tongues and outsole while sitting atop a white midsole.

While the Nike Kyrie 3 has had a strong run of creative colorways and big-game moments, Kyrie looks to move on to the Nike Kyrie 4. The Nike Kyrie 4 will make its debut in a simple black and white colorway, that is complemented by a speckled midsole and hits of green and blue. This sneaker will feature a nubuck and mesh constructed upper that is reinforced by Flywire support. The shoe sits atop a rubber outsole with extended “teeth” outriggers, reminiscent of the Kyrie 1, that are inspired by the Sydney Opera House in Kyrie Irving’s home country of Australia. Kyrie branding is seen on the tongue while a large Nike Swoosh is displayed on the side.

Kyrie Irving has been the talk of the off-season as he asked to be traded out of Cleveland and had basketball fans shocked. This KD 10 features a white Flyknit upper with GSW-themed Swoosh logos on the sides. Nike PG 1 ‘Superstition’

This summer has been unlike any other for Paul George. He was traded to OKC back in June and Indiana Pacer fans weren’t very happy. Since then he has settled down in Oklahoma City and prepared for the season as he and Russell Westbrook look to become the next big dynamic duo in the NBA. A new home for PG means that new colorways of the Nike PG 1 are expected. This first colorway is being dubbed the ‘Baseline’ and it comes dress in a grey suede build with lasered detailing throughout the upper. OKC details appear on the lateral forefoot with “OKC PG13” lettering, which is the first PG1 to rep his new home.
