There’s no denying it: 2020 has felt strange without the Summer Games. The Olympics have a fantastic ability to bring us together in the spirit of competition, rooting for our home nations or the underdog alike.

But that just gives us room to be nostalgic; to take a look back at iconic moments in Olympic history. And what bigger moment than the original U.S. men’s basketball “Dream Team” winning gold in Barcelona in ’92?

Prior to 1992, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) only allowed amateur athletes the chance to compete in the Olympics, which ruled out NBA talent. Sounds like the Olympics’ loss.

Incredibly, USA Basketball voted against letting pros play in the Olympics, but the ruling was passed and the American governing body asked the NBA to supply players for Barcelona. The Association was hesitant, but we all know how that turned out.
