5. John Elway
Team: Baltimore Colts
Round: 1st, 1st OVR
Draft day drama. In another hold-out situation, two sport athlete, John Elway had a decision to make. The Baltimore Colts were on the verge of selecting him with the 1st overall pick in the draft, but Elway, not wanting to play for an unsuccessful team had something else in mind. He had recently finished his first summer of baseball with the New York Yankees and “The Boss”, George Steinbrenner, wanted him to be his starting Right Fielder.
Elway had told the Colts not to pick him, as he wouldn’t play for them and would instead go and play for Steinbrenner. The Colts would eventually trade Elway to the Broncos for quarterback Mark Hermann, the rights to offensive tackle Chris Hinton and a first-round pick in the 1984 draft, which ended up being guard Ron Solt. Elway was very close to playing baseball, but ultimately chose football and in doing so, becoming one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.
