Earlier this month the Nike Air Mission released in a new but familiar colorway of Black and Volt. This week however, things get back to the tradition that made the Air Mission one of the most memorable sneakers on the gridiron during the ’90s. Although the San Diego Chargers’ Junior Seau is most remembered as the face of the Nike Air Mission, that’s only one side of the story.
Junior Seau led the Chargers through the AFC to the Super Bowl wearing the Air Mission but in the NFC, it was this colorway of the Nike Air Mission that was regularly worn by Ricky Watters of the San Francisco 49ers that helped it become an iconic Nike trainer. When was the last time two players wearing the same trainer faced off in the Super Bowl?
Although this year’s Super Bowl won’t feature the Chargers, 49ers, or even the Air Mission, there’s no doubt the love of the game is as strong as it was in the 1995 commercial above. And the Nike Air Mission is a reminder of that love for the big game and our sneakers.
