Although we’re a month removed from the tragic events that took place in Newtown, CT, there has been and still remains an overwhelming amount of support being given to the survivors and grieving families as well as tribute been paid to the lives that were lost as result. While no effort will be enough to fully console the families of those lost, various sports teams and athletes have paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy, in their own respective and special ways.
Having also gone through a jarring tragedy in recent history, the Virginia Tech football team paid their respects to those lost in the school shooting that took place on their campus just 5 years ago as well as to the students and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary. On their helmets, they donned a special ribbon decal with the number 58 on it, signifying the total amount of people killed in those two incidents.
In the NFL, the New York Giants had “SHES” inscribed on the back of their helmets, standing for “Sandy Hook Elementary School”. For the New England Patriots’ helmets, a “Town of Newtown” decal was added to the back, which the wore through the remainder of the season.
The NBA also offered their tribute to the victims and survivors, with LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Dwyane Wade each writing “Newtown, CT” on their signature sneakers as well as tweeting their condolences.
Unfortunate as the circumstances are, it’s comforting to see the nation come together to show support and reverence in a time of tragedy.
With that being said, we here at Finish Line send our condolences to the victims’ families during this trying time.
