If you’ve ever had a knee injury, you know that once it happens, you’ve got bad knees for life. While that may be the end all, be all for those participating in high-intensity sports, for you recreationers, it’s not over. In fact, there are some shoes out there that are just what you need for those tricky knees.

Asics GEL-Kayano 19: This is their 19th time around with this model, and while they’ve done a pretty good job getting things right, they keep finding ways to make this shoe even better. The fit has been improved, the weight has been lightened, but the real draw is the new Dynamic DuoMax Support System that provides the stability needs for your unstable knees.

New Balance 990: If you know New Balance, you know that they don’t skimp out when it comes to comfort and cushioning. Overpronation is a common problem that goes hand-in-hand with knees issues, and the 990‘s ENCAP midsole and NDurance outsole offset that for superior stability and durability.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13: Usually when shoe companies make version after version of a particular sneaker year after year, it’s most likely due to the fact that they’re doing something right. This notion holds true for the newest model in the Adrenaline GTS line. With this shoe, you get a built-in crash pad that reduces the shock and impact that can cause weak knees to give out.

Brooks Trance 12: Brooks is at the front of the pack in the running shoe race, so much so that they can specialize in providing exactly what a runner needs for whatever those needs may be. If knee problems are one of your problems, check out the Trance 12. Brooks’ trademark crash pad absorbs impact to create a smooth transition throughout your stride.

Got problems in the knees? Your solution is in the shoes. So, check the aforementioned selection out and more at FinishLine.com.

The running landscape is constantly evolving, as well as the runner traversing it. One brand that’s making a point to stay current and bridge the gap between the two is Brooks Sports. For runners looking to change the way they run, check out these shoes from Brooks and find out why you might need to go a different route.

This is the 12th time Brooks has gone back to the drawing board to revamp the Adrenaline GTS 12, but it’s still the fit and feel you’ve come to expect. This time they’ve added more mesh to the upper and a crash pad in the heel for increased ventilation and shock absorption, respectively. For them to continue to make this shoe, they’ve got to be doing something right.

For those with a more neutral and natural running gait, there’s the Pure Flow 2.0. With superior arch support, and a center strike pod to promote a more natural landing, the added technology has made for a bulky shoe. If you’re hitting the trails, you might need a little extra for what Mother Nature has up her sleeve.

Catering to a wider range of neutral runners is the Ghost 5. What makes this shoe so good is Brooks took the opportunity to incorporate the best of the Ghost 3 and 4, and adding a few more innovations. Incredibly smooth, well-balanced and adaptive, it’s the perfect shoe for the you and your imperfections.

The beauty of the Brooks line is in their variety, and being available for men and women, there’s an option for every runner.

There are many different types of running shoes on the market, all designed for specific purposes and different types of running. For instance, a running shoe that is meant for the road has completely different design features than a running shoe meant for the trail. In this article, we will highlight key features of trail running shoes to help you better understand why they work best for the trail.

There are two key features in trail runners that make them ideal for running on trail surfaces: For one, they have better traction for rugged terrain, and two, they protect your feet better from rocks or roots that you may encounter on a trail. For instance, the Brooks Cascadia 7 Men’s Trail Running Shoes feature an intuitive lug pattern sole that is tough enough for almost any terrain. In addition, a ballistic rock shield and toe protector incorporated in the shoe ensures your feet don’t sustain injuries from debris on the trail.

The Nike LunarFly+ Men’s Running Shoes have similar design functions that also make them ideal for running on a trail. The Lunarlon cushioned outsole is encased in a resilient foam exterior for a Dynamic Support configuration that will prepare you for even the most rugged trail conditions. The shoe also features an aggressive outsole pattern that is highly durable, making them perfect for the road less traveled.

Overall, trail runners offer the durability and protection needed for running on rough terrain. So if you enjoy getting out of the city and onto the secluded trails for a run, make sure that you have the proper shoe attire.

It’s common knowledge that the shoe life cycle goes from brand new, to broken-in, to fitting right, to getting old, and finally to falling apart. For your everyday shoe, you can push those through the the full cycle and into its twilight. For running shoes, on the other hand, you might want to get a replacement before it gets to that point.

It’s always exciting getting a new pair of shoes until you actually put them on, and they just don’t feel like the shoes you’re used to. They’re brand new and that phase lasts from 5-10 intense wearings. Before you know it, though, you’re into the broken-in phase, where you’re settling into the new fit and the insole and inner lining have morphed to better accommodate your foot. Fitting right is the next phase, where your feet and the shoe have found a happy medium, so much so that if you slip on your old pair, those feel weirdly unfamiliar. The phase of your shoes fitting right lasts quite a while, but when it’s over, you’ll know, because that’s the moment that your shoes stop responding and the insole is completely depleted. Shortly thereafter comes the falling apart stage, where your shoes literally fall apart, with key components breaking away due to glues deteriorating from overuse.

Needless to say, once you get to the stage where you feel as though your shoes are becoming unresponsive and slightly uncomfortable, it’s time to change things up. If you go beyond that point, you’ve reached the point of no return, as in, they should never return to your feet. More than likely, you’re probably in the latter stages of the shoe life cycle, so here are a few pairs for you to consider for a rejuvenation and restart.

Nike Lunarglide+ 4: Back for the fourth time, the Lunarglide offers the same comfort that it has been known for, this time upgraded with Flywire for an adaptive and snug fit.

Asics GEL-Kayano 19: It’s #19 for this great shoe, and it keeps coming back for good reason. Call us crazy, but this shoe has been improved with a better fit across the upper and the weight has been reduced significantly.

Brooks Trance 11: Brooks has brought back their own version of the shoe that keeps on giving with the Trance 11. This one boasts superior cushioning, superior support and a luxurious ride as well.

To keep up with those always on-the-run runners, the folks over at Brooks are staying ahead of the game with new technology and new shoes. By late December, they’re planning to release the sequel to their popular PureProject Collection. If you’re just now hearing about all of this, check out some shoes they have out now to see if you should join in on the project.

Although a revamped model is on its way, Brooks will be hard pressed to improve upon their Brooks PureFlow. If you want a natural feel, the PureFlow goes with the flow, keeping you light on your toes while actually being a pretty good looking shoe. We can’t wait to see what Brooks has in store for its successor.

Any over pronators in the room? If so, then I’m talking to you, and I advise taking a look at the Brooks PureCadence. It’s made to keep you stable while also promoting a natural foot strike. All in all, a good shoe, and we can be sure that its next iteration will kick it up a notch.

Brooks is back at it again, and this round of the collection should prove to outdo and impress like Brooks has done before. Keep it locked in and don’t miss when the new models are released.

Pronation is the body’s natural way of absorbing the shock of the foot strike, starting on the outside heel and moving to a neutral point where the back spine of the shoe is perpendicular to the ground it sits on.“Over pronation” is when the foot rotates too far past the neutral point gait cycle and the foot collapses in. This misalignment if left untreated can lead to popular running injuries such as shin splints, plantar fasciatis and IT band issues.

To prevent over pronation from occurring it is important to a find shoe that has some corrective feature, most often seen as a medial post. A medial post is a firmer foam on the inside of the shoe that prevents the foot from over rotating in the foot strike. Because over pronation effects roughly 85% of runners, shoe companies offer plenty of options.

A couple suggestions for runners looking for a bit more support to alleviate the over pronation issues include the Nike Zoom Structure+ and Brooks Adrenaline. Both have been staples for over a decade that many runners have come to rely on. An additional option for runners preferring a Gel cushion, the ASICS GT 2000 series provide all the features necessary to aid with over pronation.

It makes sense when choosing a running shoe to lean toward the lightweight solution, right? Wrong. Shedding excess poundage is great, but not at the cost of sacrificing essential components.

You can adapt to a little extra weight. Inadequate arch support? Not so much. You’re better off going with the shoe that aids to correct your under/over pronation. Your back will thank you later.

Then there’s the question of responsiveness. Are you getting as much out of your run as you should? Without particular features, your shoe may actually be causing you to overexert the wrong muscle groups.

Lastly, but ultimately the most important, is the comfort factor. Put plainly, the shoe taking the minimalist approach is most likely to veto all measures taken to promote comfortability. At the end of the day, this is a no-brainer; saving money and going barefoot would be a better option.

As natural as running is, if you’ve tried doing it barefoot, you know it’s not easy. Yet, on the other hand, implement too much technology, and the natural feel is gone. Whether you demand comfort, support or responsiveness, here are a few shoes that specialize in those areas while keeping a foot in the natural door.

With a proven track record, the 18th iteration of the Asics GEL-Kayanois lighter and better than ever. With Biomorphic Fit mesh stretched across the upper, superior comfort is this shoe’s forte.

Looking for support? The Brooks PureCadence implores you to look no further. A wide Nav Band is locked down to the medial strike pod, delivering superior arch support. While providing needed stability to runners that require it, the PureCadence follows through by emulating what a natural foot strike feels like.

For those of you that need a shoe that responds, the Mizuno Wave Prophecy is that shoe. Its full-length Infinity Wave is fine-tuned to work with you on your run, but the major component is the AP midsole that’s ultra-lightweight and responsive. Calling for a shoe that gives back? The Wave Prophecy answers that call.

The demands of the marathon runner often far exceed that of just the weekend warrior. Being the all shoes are not created equal, it is paramount that you find a shoe that will help carry you through the difficult training and the 26.2 on race day. Check out these sneakers that are battle-tested and built to last.

The ASICS GEL-Nimbus 14 has a sleek profile, with a plush interior for maximum comfort and a stable ride. With the astronomical amount of strides taken to conquer a marathon, it’s essential that the GEL-Nimbus stays lean by reducing weight. And for you under-pronators, this model by Asics is specially designed to compensate for and correct it, for optimum stride efficiency.

As the 12th iteration in this line, the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12 delivers what you have come to expect from Brooks. From its fit and feel, to the inclusion of mesh in the upper, it carries the torch passed down from previous models. When the distance starts to wear on and your stride and mechanics deteriorate, the built-in crash pad kicks in, reducing shock and conserving energy. The Adrenaline GTS 12, on the other hand, is more ideal for the over-pronator, providing support and alleviating excess shock.

The previous two favorites where both engineered while catering to a specific type of runner. With the Mizuno Wave Prophecy, it’s all about delivering a truly complete shoe with groundbreaking technology to back up that claim. That tech-spec list includes Dynamotion for optimal fit, reducing lateral stress on the foot, and Infinity Wave to work in harmony with your body. Throw in an AP midsole for lightweight, yet responsive cushioning and you’re ready to go the distance.

For the shoe connoisseurs out there, you can’t be limited to just sneakers in your footwear arsenal. All’s well when wearing basketball shoes to say, play basketball, but you need some go-to kicks when you decide to trek beyond the hardwood. Here are the top five outdoor trail shoes to consider making available at your disposal.

When hitting the trails, there’s bound to be some bumps along the way, but the Brooks Cascadia 7 is engineered prepared for what lies ahead. Possessing an asymmetric upper wrapping your foot for a snug fit, the Cascadia also has a built-in ballistic rock shield to provide toe protection. So, when you’re faced with traversing uncharted territory, this shoe is rugged and ready for the toughest terrain.

Contrary to the idea of protecting your feet from the terrain of the beaten path, the Nike Free Trail takes a minimalist approach with a sock-like fit. The goal behind this shoe is to help runners return to their barefoot roots, training your feet to provide their own control and support. A seamless upper gives you wraparound cushioning and comfort, with the Free™ technology outsole facilitating maximum flexibility.

Committed to comfort, support and durability, the Nike LunarFly+ Trail 3 is built from the ground up to respond throughout your run. It possesses an inner sleeve for wraparound support, while the breathable mesh upper is releasing any excess heat built up. With this shoe, you no longer have to choose between comfort and stability, it covers all the bases.

The outdoor trails are a stark contrast from the controlled environs of the indoor track. To be ready for the unexpected, you need a shoe that’ll hold up without holding you back. The Nike Flex Trail does just that and more, with a reinforced toe and heel installed for increased durability. What’s more amazing is how, despite the added features, it still manages to remain lightweight and snug for a personalized fit every time you lace them up.

As evidenced by it’s model name, the New Balance Minimus 2 sheds all the bells and whistles for a more minimalist approach, keeping the shoe extremely lightweight. Using a Vibram outsole, the Minimus is focused on encouraging natural foot position and foot-strike. Overall, the discarded weight makes for a true feeling of running without any shoes on.
