Get ready for probably the worst, and the best, advice there is when it comes to working out. Stop. Not completely, and not forever, but yes, stop working out. Inasmuch as it’s important to give it your all when working out, it’s just as pertinent, if not more so, to rest in between work out days.

Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind to get the most out of your workouts and get back up and running when the next gym day rolls back around.

1. Catch Some Zs

Frankly, sleep or the lack thereof, affects virtually every aspect of a functioning human body. Cutting back on sleep messes with hormone levels and kills energy, and that usually results in having to go to sugars as a quick energy source. In other words, that extra hour of sleep is well worth it.

2. Avoid Over Working Out

Not giving your muscles the opportunity to rejuvenate can actually stunt your progress. Yes, you’ll see results, but they won’t be as apparent as the results you’ll witness if you give your muscles time to do their thing.

3. Replenish the Muscles

Ever felt tired after a workout? You probably know that comes with the territory. That’s your body screaming for the nutrients it lost during the workout to be replenished. In addition to drinking water, answer your body as soon as possible after the rigorous partaking with a load of carbs and protein to reduce the chance of muscle damage and facilitate muscle growth.

4. Target the Soreness

Just like a car’s check engine light shouldn’t go unattended to, close attention should be paid to muscle soreness after a workout. Attack those sore spots with an at-home, do-it-yourself massage or with a foam roller to speed up your recovery for your next workout.

5. Active Recovery

A day off from working out doesn’t necessarily mean going into full couch potato mode for 24 hours. It just means to tone things down a bit, or maybe even partake in an alternative form of exercise. If you hit the weights hard on Monday, consider going on a light jog on Tuesday.

Overall, the key is to balance it all out without overdoing things, working hard on your “on” days, and taking a load off in between, during your downtime.
