If you’ve ever sustained a sports injury you know very well that it is not only bad physically, but sometimes the worst part is what it can do to you mentally. No longer can you go out there and compete in your favorite sport, and even staying physically active at all can prove to be very hard. You might just drive yourself crazy staying cooped up in the house all day, but not if you follow our helpful tips to staying sane after an injury.

  1. Eat Healthy – Studies show that eating an excess of processed foods can be linked to depressive symptoms. Instead, eating whole foods can in fact improve your mood. In particular, omega-3’s that are found in fish can help regulate the serotonin produced in your body, which is the chemical that relates to happiness. Also, studies have shown that the folic acids found in whole grains also might lead to a reduction in depression.
  2. Stay Social – If you aren’t planning on going crazy during your recovery, you are definitely going to need some outside support. Keep in close contact with your friends, and even reconnect with some old ones, because being around other people that you enjoy will surely boost up your mood.
  3. Sleep – A lack of sleep produces higher rates of stress hormones, and more stress hormones means the worser the mood you will be in. Sometimes we associate sleep with laziness, but this is the exact opposite way you should look at it, because the more sleep you get, the more energy you will have when you wake up.
  4. Keep Your Mind Active – Keeping your mind active is key to staying sane during a recovery. You can stimulate your mind by reading books, researching things you are interested in online, or watching some fact-filled documentaries. The more you keep your mind focused on interesting things, the less it will be focused on your injury.
  5. Go Outdoors – Studies have shown that a lack of Vitamin D can lead to depression, and the easiest way to stock up on Vitamin D is to get some sunlight. Chances are, you are going to be indoors more than usual during your recovery, so it is important to go outside whenever possible. Not only will you get more Vitamin D, but just being around other people or the beauty of nature will lift your spirits as well.
